5 Minutes With Jacob, Mountain Road Cycles Owner and Bike Enthusiast
How did you get into the bike business?
I started in Freestyle Bmx Competitions in the mid to late 80's around 12 years old. Our local shop was a little tired of fixing all my bike problems so they took me into the back to learn how to fix bikes! I loved the mechanics, history and people. Then they hired me and the rest is history.
Most satisfying part of owning your own business?
The Customers! and the generational aspect of families over the years. Helping new riders and aging riders alike and everything in between. In addition, the industry as a whole, from suppliers to stores, has a personality that can't be matched. Seeing young employees, who spend years with us, grow into other careers is also very satisfying.

Most challenging part of your business?
Adapting. After 35 years, we have seen it all economically, globally, supply, trends, employee management and everything else. Be willing to adapt - and there is always new technology to learn.
How has the business changed since you started?
Business changes week to week, month to month and year to year. However, remember, it's still business 101 and a sense of entrepreneurship.
Best business advice you've gotten?
Just be honest and have fun!
