Meet Michelle from Sage and Honey in Chagrin Falls

How did you decide to open Sage & Honey?
My daughter, Kaylee (Kat) attended Wake Forest University for undergrad and there is a place there called the Book House. It had a similar vibe to our store - lots of soft seating, books, bar etc.
Alongside the Book House was a restaurant that only served crepes and we decided to add that to the mix. We felt it would be a great addition to Chagrin Falls!
We truly strive to offer an experiential retail space, meaning we are different things to different people.
If you want a place to hang out and get work done – we are your spot! A place to meet friends, grab a coffee or wine and hang out in a cozy environment – that’s us too! Stop by for a tasty lunch, rent an event space, come to fun events – and of course peruse books– we have it! Kaylee and I both have a love for books, so opening a bookcafe was a dream come true.
As you're celebrating your first anniversary, what's been your biggest learning so far?
My background is not in retail, but in HR and distribution, so the whole experience has been new for me! Developing a business model that embraces not only retail but café management has really taught me a lot. My daughter was an English/French major and is a published author, so the curating of the book selection was right up her alley, but still gauging your market has its own learning curve.
Any advice for other entrepreneurs?
Just do it! Pray a lot and go with your gut. Also do a deep dive into what it will cost to get you going and a solid business plan and marketing plan to really push your concept out and reach as many people as possible to let them know all you have to offer! Believe in your vision!
